Customer-Hosted Glean Alternatives: What to Compare
For a customer-hosted Glean alternative, shortlist Jarvis when you want company knowledge connected to governed agent workflows, and Onyx when you want to evaluate a self-deployed search and assistant platform. Jarvis Chat supplies the employee workspace; Jarvis Knowledge Base supplies domain-scoped retrieval, source citations and an agent-callable tool.
Keep Glean in the comparison if hosting is your main concern. Its deployment documentation explicitly offers Customer Hosted deployment in AWS and GCP. The useful distinction is where the system runs, who operates it and which access rules it preserves, not “Glean is cloud-only.”
Compare the deployment and operating model
Public documentation checked October 1, 2026; confirm configuration and operating responsibilities before purchase.
| Decision | Glean | Jarvis | Onyx |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer-hosted option | AWS or GCP customer environment | Customer-cloud Jarvis workspace and retrieval components | Self-deployed application, with documented installation and lifecycle commands |
| Operating responsibility | Glean manages upgrades, patching and monitoring | Agree customer and ASCENDING duties in the deployment/support scope | Assign an operator for the self-deployed environment; confirm contracted support |
| Knowledge access | Connectors mirror source permissions; behavior varies by source | Identity-bound, domain-scoped retrieval; verify the required connector’s document-level behavior | Source-user permission sync requires Enterprise Edition |
| Knowledge-to-action path | Agents and tools for connected applications | Retrieval as an MCP tool within governed agent workflows | Custom actions through MCP or OpenAPI |
| First proof to request | Required connector, customer-hosted architecture and access model | Required knowledge domain, employee access and downstream workflow | Required edition, connector permission sync and production operations |
Glean’s customer-hosted option is vendor-operated: its docs do not support customers manually patching Glean services or changing the architecture. Its AWS access model explains deployment roles, support access and customer controls. That may fit a team that wants account-level control without owning product operations.
Onyx’s quickstart provides installation, upgrade, status and log commands. Name the production owner for backups, recovery, upgrades and connector failures.
For Jarvis, name who will own the cluster, model configuration, connectors and incident response. Customer hosting is a product characteristic; the exact managed-service responsibilities belong in the agreed delivery scope.
Compare permissions on your actual source
Do not decide from connector counts alone. A connector that retrieves files is not necessarily a connector that reproduces every source-system sharing rule.
Glean’s connector documentation describes mirroring content and permissions, with indexed, live and hybrid access depending on the connector. Onyx’s connector documentation explicitly marks respect for source-user permissions as Enterprise Edition only. Jarvis documents role-based, domain-scoped knowledge access; validate the required source’s finer permission behavior during implementation.
Use one illustrative procurement test: an employee asks about the travel-expense policy, while a finance reviewer can also access a restricted exceptions document. Give both users the same question, then inspect the answer and cited passages.
| Check | Evidence required from each candidate |
|---|---|
| Employee asks the policy question | Correct answer from the permitted policy, with an inspectable source |
| Employee asks about a restricted exception | No restricted content disclosed through answer, preview or citation |
| Finance reviewer asks the same question | Relevant authorized evidence is available |
| Source owner removes access or updates a policy | Behavior reflects the connector’s documented sync and permission-update process |
| Neither document answers the question | The assistant acknowledges missing evidence rather than inventing policy |
Agree expected results and use comparable configurations. A citation makes an answer checkable, not automatically correct. Our enterprise RAG guide covers source preparation and retrieval checks.
Trace the model data path separately
Application hosting and model processing are separate choices. Draw the route from the policy source to the index, retrieved passage, model endpoint and logs. Include any external parsing or indexing services that the proposed configuration uses.
Glean documents model selection across enabled providers and key configurations. Onyx supports hosted providers and local runtimes. Jarvis Chat also supports multiple configured providers; its own hosting summary distinguishes private LLM deployment from sending requests to an external model API.
Confirm endpoint, region, retention terms and operating access. A “private AI” label or hosting choice alone does not establish regulatory suitability.
If answers must lead to actions, test that step too
Suppose the employee then asks to submit an expense exception. Finding a policy is not permission to create or approve the request. Treat submission and approval as separately configured operations, with the necessary business-system authorization and human decision.
Jarvis Knowledge Base can participate in this kind of agent workflow as a retrieval tool. Jarvis AgentFlow supplies orchestration and human sign-off gates; the expense-system integration still needs to be scoped. This is a proposed workflow, not a claim of a delivered expense connector.
Action support is not unique to Jarvis. Glean documents agents and tools, and Onyx documents MCP and OpenAPI actions. Compare the actual allowed action, denied action, reviewer step and audit evidence rather than marking all three “automation: yes.”
Shortlist against the work your team needs
- Evaluate Glean when its connector-led search and assistant experience fits, and Glean-operated infrastructure in your account meets the hosting requirement.
- Evaluate Onyx when a self-deployed platform fits your engineering capacity, with the required enterprise permissions and support included in scope.
- Evaluate Jarvis when you want a customer-hosted workspace and governed retrieval connected to agents and business workflows, with ASCENDING’s deployment and integration scope agreed upfront.
For Jarvis, request a demo using the policy, restricted exceptions document and two employee roles. Include a proposed submission step if needed. Ask to see source evidence, access decisions and the boundary between supplied components and integration work.

Customer-Hosted Glean Alternative Questions
When is Jarvis worth evaluating as a Glean alternative?
When you need a customer-hosted employee workspace plus governed knowledge retrieval that can participate in agent workflows. Confirm source coverage, permission behavior and deployment responsibilities for your use case.
Can Glean run in our own cloud account?
Yes. Glean documents Customer Hosted deployment in AWS and GCP. Glean still manages application and infrastructure operations; this is different from a customer independently patching the product.
Does self-hosted Onyx include source-permission sync?
Onyx lists permission-sync connectors as an Enterprise Edition feature. Confirm the edition and behavior of each required connector rather than assuming the free deployment includes those controls.
Does customer-hosted mean no data reaches an external model?
Not automatically. Check the configured model endpoints, indexing services, logs and support access. Hosting the application in your account does not establish the complete data-processing boundary.
